October 2010 Storm Damage

The storm knocked out power for almost 4 full days and did considerable damage to trees anf fencing. The zoo lost over 10 large pine trees 60 to 80 feet tall and between 80 to 100 years old. Along with many other smaller trees. These can never be replaced. Lucily all buildings were spared.

October 2010 storm damage

The picture above and below are of the barn and Wallaby enclosure. The tree split in half and landed on a split rail fence post driving it about 8 inches in the ground. It also took down the wallaby and potbelly pig fence.

Wallaby Enclosure Damage

Above is damage to the back side of the sika deer fence.

This shows a tree from the back of the barn that took down the fence layed across the aisle and hit the pheasant enclosure.

This is damage in the reindeer enclosure. There were 4 tree on this fence alone.

Here is the condition of the reindeer fence. About 50 or 60 feet had to be replaced

Large pine tree blow down root ball

Here I am standing at the root ball of one of the trees

The picture above is of the bear enclosure. A tree that was uprooted in the sika deer enclosure and fell on the bear enclosure taking out the deer fence and resting here on the bears. The bear stayed in his den a few days after the storm and would look up as if to check the sky for falling objects each time he was fed and had to come out.

Pot Belly Pigs nursing in storm debris

Not everyone was too upset. Here is a mother potbelly pig nursing her litter  nestled in the debris of the branches.
