Whitetail Deer

Whitetail Deer at GarLyn Zoo Whitetail Deer Antler Sheds at GarLyn Zoo

Whitetail deer are one of North America's most abundant animals. Pictured above is William II (William F Buckley). In this picture he is 2 1/2 years old and this is his 2nd set of antlers. Whitetail deer, when bottle raised can become quite tame. Although from my experience, if raised without the company of a tame adult deer, they are little rockets when something spooks them. They will suddenly bolt in any direction without looking first. When a calm adult is present, one that is used to it's surroundings and doesn't scare easily, the little fawns seem to feed off their reactions and not bolt as far or as fast. Whitetail seem to be a little bit pickier eaters than some of our other deer. They seem to only want only the nicest, leafiest hay and will leave most stems uneaten. We also feed a deer pellet and sweet feed mix twice a day.
