We have two white-nosed coatimundi (now
commonly referred to as just Coati)
females Rita and Lola. We made a trade with Cindy Lou's Zoo in Roscommon to get them.
The coati's are native to Southern parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona
as well as Mexico, Central and South America. Similar to our
raccoon but with a slimmer build and longer face with a nose that acts like an anteaters.
They sniff around looking for food with this nose moving back and forth
sniffing the ground. One of the big differences is that they are active
during the day instead of night like the raccoon. Or as our
granddaughter says, "they're dayturnal not nocturnal". And boy are they
ever active. This makes for a much more interesting exhibit. They are
omnivores so they will eat most anything. They are fond of grapes and
really enjoy pitted dates, dried cherries, bananas, sweet potatoes and
carrots. They main part of their here is dog food. This gives them both
a good meat base diet as well as grains, fruits and vegetables.
Being native to a warm climate means these animals must be kept in a
heated building during the winter months.
